Happy Columbus Day!

by Lois Berman 10/08/2019

This Monday we celebrate Christopher Columbus' arrival in America on October 12, 1492.  Did you know that other countries celebrate the anniversary too?  Spain, Peru, Italy, Mexico and various South and Central American countries all have their own names for the holiday.  Contrary to what many believe, Columbus didn't actually discover America; that distinction goes to Norwegian Viking Lief Erikson approximately 500 years prior.  The importance of Columbus and his crew's landing in America was the connections they created between the Old World and the New, including the transfer of cultures (plants, animals, even humans) and technology as well.  This was called the Columbian Exchange.

Just as other countries have different names for the holiday, many Americans celebrate in various ways.  As a national holiday, most banks, schools and offices are closed for the day.  Some riverfront areas have restorations of the ships that Columbus and his crew sailed on for people to explore. One of my favorite Columbus Day events was an outdoor concert followed by fireworks.  However you plan to spend this Columbus Day, I hope you enjoy it!
