Dancing Can Help Your Mind Stay Younger

by Lois Berman 10/07/2019

We all know that dancing is a fun way to keep your body physically active.  Now, recent studies are showing that it helps your mind stay active too, leading to an increase in brain health.  And who doesn't want to reverse the signs of aging in the brain and anywhere else?

I decided to see what it was all about and took a dance class yesterday at my community center.  The instructor was great and taught us so many different steps, but in progressive ways that made them easy to follow.  I was having so much fun it didn't seem like a "mental" workout.  Yet I realized how much thought I was putting into each move; whether it was counting the steps or remembering to go to the left or right, etc.  It was exciting to realize that I was essentially doing brain exercises while also being physically active and socializing with friends and other members of my community.  Jackpot!

There are so many types of dance styles to choose from.  Many studios offer everything from ballroom to line dancing, even belly dancing!  Zumba is a high paced dance fitness class also found in gyms and other centers.  There really is something for everyone.

It's never too early to exercise your brain.  No matter what age you are, give dancing a try.  I hope you have as much fun as I did!
