Thanksgiving has always been a special holiday for me. I love the delicious smells that fill my kitchen as my family fills my home. The Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade has always been a special tradition with my family too. Living in NY for most of my life, there were some years that we would bundle up in our jackets and head into the city to watch the floats go by in person. They're just so majestic! Despite how crowded it gets, there's an atmosphere of joy and excitement that brings smiles to everyone. Here in Arizona, the parade is still a special tradition; we just watch it on tv. Since it's two hours earlier here, I usually record it and then have it on in the background when everyone arrives.
Another great Thanksgiving tradition are the annual Turkey Trots. They're usually about 5 miles and a great way to work up an appetite for the feast to come. It's so nice to have the slightly cool - but not cold! - Arizona temps encouraging you to get out for a light run. Many Trots have a suggested donation of canned goods to help stock local food pantries. It's a great way to give thanks to others too.
And the feast itself...nothing says warmth and love to me as much as gathering everyone around the Thanksgiving table. I must admit, I tend to go a little overboard - I've got our traditional turkey, green bean casserole and sweet potato pie, but then I've got to make my nephew's favorite brisket, my son's vegetarian option, and a few extra side dishes to go with each. And desserts - everyone knows I have a sweet tooth & bring assorted pies and cookies, and I always have fixings for ice cream sundaes. My mouth is watering already and we still have a few weeks to go! It's so nice to have all month to look forward to this holiday. What are some favorite traditions that you're looking forward to?
