Crazy Arizona Weather? Beautiful sunsets

by Lois Berman 09/30/2019

If you live in Southern Arizona like I do, you may have experienced a few crazy storms recently. That's because from roughly July through September, we're in Monsoon Season. All of a sudden, our dry air becomes more humid, which can lead to thunderstorms, lightning, flash flooding and high winds. Sometimes there's even hail and dust storms! These storms often come on quickly and it's good to be prepared. Arizona's Department of Transportation has some great tips for keeping safe during these storms, such as keeping extra supplies in your car in case you're stuck with closed roads for awhile.

Every monsoon that's of any significance produces a microburst. What exactly is a microburst? It's just like it sounds: a burst of air in a relatively small area, usually less than 2.5 miles. It sometimes is likened to a tornado, except that wind flows outward from a microburst instead of inward like a tornado. Winds can get up to more than 100 mph and can cause significant damage. Fortunately, the lifespan of a microburst is only around 5-15 minutes, but that's long enough for me! Gorgeous sunsets make it all worthwhile. One of my favorite things about living in Arizona are the fabulous sunsets we get to experience almost every night. And while there are usually gray skies during the monsoons, we are often gifted with the most spectacular sunsets afterwards. I love sitting on my patio after a storm and enjoying the peaceful beauty of the sunset. Want to join me sometime? Just say when, I'll be ready to hear from you!
